Introduction to Kitchen Gardens

If you love gardening and also cook, it is only a matter of time until you start thinking about combining these two passions. A garden where you grow your own food is commonly known as a kitchen garden.

A kitchen garden can be small and easy to manage, yet it can produce many of the herbs, fruits, and vegetables that you use in your cooking on a regular basis.

Since the goal of a kitchen garden is to provide food for your cooking, it should be located not too far from your kitchen. Most people who love cooking and gardening absolutely love walking to their garden, picking fresh fruits and vegetables and using them to prepare foods immediately thereafter. It’s even better if you can plant your kitchen garden in such a way that you can see it from your kitchen or dining room window.

If your primary objective is to serve fresh and healthy meals for your family, plant a variety of popular vegetables and herbs.

If you like to cook Asian food, go with a variety of herbs and leafy greens.

For Italian cuisine, you will need oregano, tomatoes, and basil as your basic fresh ingredients.

Mexican foods require cilantro, tomatoes, garlic, and onions. You can also grow an array of hot and mild peppers.

When deciding where your garden will go, choose an area that gets a lot of sunlight. Ideally, you want your garden to get at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Morning light is better than afternoon light because it is less stressful and dries the dew early in the day.

To establish a garden, use wooden sticks or a garden hose. Use bricks or stones or plastic to create a bed. A protective fence around your garden is a good idea if you have to deal with wild animals on your property or if your kids play in the yard a lot.
